Class Descriptions

American Heritage Book Club:  Little House (Grades 4 - 7)

Mrs. Kim Schionning

Come join us as we journey in the 1800s through time-honored tales told by Laura Ingalls Wilder.  This cross-curriculum literature study will give students an appreciation for U.S. History including pioneer life and the westward movement.  Students will experience the gold rush where we will eat birds' nest pudding, twist doughnuts, watermelon rind pickles, cornbread, hasty pudding, johnnycakes, cracklings, and molasses-on-snow candy.  They will roll up their sleeves as they wash clothes by hand, split wood, make butter, and attempt carving, gold panning, farming, corn cob dolls, woodworking, and discover if sawdust really does protect ice from melting.   Please note that during this class all students are required to be reading the books at a pace that is up to three chapters each week.  Whether your child is remarkably advanced or somewhat delayed in reading, this class will be an innovative opportunity for boys and girls to journey together through "Farmer Boy", "Little House in the Big Woods", and "Little House on the Prairie."

Exploring the Ancient World:  Geography and History (Grades K - 7)

Mrs. Dana Bergman

It has been said that experience is one of the best teachers, so the goal of Exploring the Ancient World will be to take the students on weekly expeditions back in time!  Beginning at the beginning, students will travel the continents and visit the people and cultures of Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, Greece, Rome, and Africa as well as the Mayan and Incan civilizations.  This class will lay the foundations of history from a Christian perspective and will aim at providing the students with the tools to understand the world around them from a Christian worldview. Students will be introduced to the geography, culture, food, art, entertainment, and religion of these regions.   God's love and provision will be a theme of this class as students study the people and places of the ancient world.  NOTE:  Older students will do a research / presentation project.

Art With Character (Grades K - 7)

Ms. Laura Miller

In this class students will enjoy a mixture of biblical character training, art, and life science, and learn to capture the beauty of God's creation while producing a nature journal and other works of art.   Animal habitats, classification, and characteristics of plants and animals will be explored.  Woven into each of the classes will be a lesson on a character trait that relates to the animal or plant being drawn.  The book series, Character Sketches from the Pages of Scripture, Illustrated by the World of Nature, will be used throughout the course to help reinforce godly character.  How can animals teach us punctuality, obedience, honesty, and kindness?  Would you like to know how a pack rat can teach us about contentment or how mistletoe can illustrate ungratefulness?  Students will have to take this class to find out!

A few classes will be held outside so that students can sketch nature firsthand. This will be a hands-on art and science experience where children will experiment with a variety of media including charcoal, soft pastel, colored pencil, watercolor, oil pastel, and tempera.  The students will receive instruction in drawing and painting as they study the elements of art and principles of design.  Godly character will be the ultimate goal as we all strive to be more like our Creator.  Optional activities will include drawings made at home, collecting specimens, and scripture worksheets.  For students who enrolled in this class during the 2006-2007 school year, this is not a repeat class, but a continuation.

C.H.I.M.E.: Children Having an Incredible Music Experience (Grades 4 - 7)

Mrs. Susan Newman
Make a joyful noise!  Have you ever seen a group of young people working together ringing chimes to create a wonderful sound of praise?  It is wonderful - and it is easier than you think!  No previous music experience is necessary because students will learn it together.  Did you know that each ringer is responsible for only two notes?  This class will give "teamwork" a whole new meaning!  Students will learn to work as a team to make beautiful music.  While they work on teamwork, they will also learn the basics of music theory and learn about handbell choirs all over the world.  Research has shown that students who are involved in music instruction and performance experience higher levels of academic success.  The experience of ringing in a handbell choir is a visual and auditory experience that students will always remember.

Educational Games (Grades 4 - 7)

Mrs. Mary Rang

Children love to play games and they learn so much from them!  Vocabulary, math, geography, and critical thinking are just a few skills that come to mind that students learn from playing games.  Our children play lots of games, but more often than not, they're playing against a computer or imaginary opponent, and the rules of play are exaggerations of ordinary behavior.  Playing games against other children gives students an opportunity to develop the critical life skills of healthy competition, gracefully losing, and humbly winning.  Good gamesmanship and good sportsmanship are qualities developed in childhood, and without them, a person can miss valuable life opportunities.  In this course, students will play card games, board games, math games, classic games, ancient and foreign games, and individual and team games.  Learning the rules and playing the games will be primary focus of this class.  Students will be expected to participate in all classroom activities.  Basic reading skills will be necessary.  Other than playing games at home - against other people, not electronically - no other OA assignments will be made.  The goal is for your grown child to tell you, "Games was my best HOUSE class, ever!'

International Connection:  World Cultures (Grades K - 3)

Mrs. Sandy Pelton

Calling all jet setters!  After students' passports are stamped, they will join a worldwide adventure as they explore governments and cultures from around the world.  They will visit Portugal, Egypt, Africa, Korea, Russia, India, and other exciting destinations.  Students will meet the rulers of these countries and learn about their government and explore their history, national flag, geography, natural resources, food, currency, industry, religious beliefs, and much more.  Did you know that Portugal is a world leader in renewable energy sources like solar, wind and wave power, and that their goal is to meet nearly all of their power needs by 2010 with these resources?  Students will sample ethnic food from the country they are studying each week.  Throughout the year students will have the opportunity to serve as star of the week.  On their designated day, they will receive special honors and surprises.  Class-related optional field trips will be offered during the school year.  In this class, each student will experience being a jet setter, first-hand!   No pre-requisite classes are necessary to derive full benefit from this adventure.

K'Nex:  Simple Machines (Grades K - 3)

Mrs. Julie Gulliver

Back by popular demand, K'Nex Simple Machines will help students learn how to be faster, stronger, taller, and wiser! The Lord has given us the tools: levers, pulleys, gears, inclined planes, wheels / axles, and combinations of all these.  Students in grades K-1 and 2-3 can learn to be Master (Simple) Machinists using K'Nex and every day items all around them. They will also put these machines to use by inventing interesting gadgets with K'Nex. Hands-on play, problem solving, outdoor adventures, and following written and verbal instruction will help students grow in physical, verbal, and mental skills while having fun!  This has been a hit with girls and boys alike. A very creative Class Creation Folder with moving parts will be produced in class.  Join us as we connect with K'Nex!

KNex:  Machines  (Grades 4 - 7)

Mrs. Julie Gulliver

Get ready to combine fun hands-on exploration and real-world concepts.  Students will be using K'Nex to uncover the mystery of machines and the reason they are so efficient.  Some of the machines produced in class include 1st, 2nd, and 3rd class levers; fixed, movable, compound and block, and tackle pulley systems; wheels and axles with the force applied to both the wheel and the axle; inclined planes, screws, and wedges; spur, crown, sprocket, rack, and pinion, transmission, and differential gear systems.  K'Nex manipulatives empower students to demonstrate their imagination and creativity as they develop realistic solutions to real world design issues while incorporating exercises in math, science, and technology.  This class will be fun for girls and boys alike.  A very creative Class Creation Folder with moving parts will be produced in class.  Join us as we connect with K'Nex!

Magic School Bus:  Science Lab (Grades K  - 3)

Mrs. Melony West

Based on the popular, award-winning book series, The Magic School Bus, this class will bring science to the front of the bus!  The students will experience a variety of challenging and exciting hands-on experiences that open their eyes to the wonders of scientific discovery. So, as Ms. Frizzle would say, "Wahoo! Get out there and explore!"  Students will take a wild ride into the mysteries of rainbows, into the center of a hurricane, to the ocean floor, inside power lines, and even inside their own bodies.  That's just the beginning.  They will bend bones, map taste buds, bounce light waves, wake up fungi, make circuits and switches, and so much more.  Seatbelts, everyone!  Let's explore!

The Nifty Fifty:  U.S. History & Geography (Grades K - 7)

Mrs. Becky Van Volkinburg

Have you ever wondered what exactly makes the fifty states that we call home so nifty?  Well, let's go on a journey and find out together!  Each week students will visit two states, and learning the capitals and geography of our great nation will be just the beginning.   They will explore the cuisine of each state and learn fun and interesting facts.  Did you know that Illinois is the world's leading producer of horseradish?  Students will look into the lives of notable Americans from each state.  Did you know that the founder of Albertsons, a store where many of us shop, is from Idaho?   Students will work on mapping skills.  Can you find all the states on a map or how about major geographical landmarks?  Students will be able to locate them by the end of the year! Which is the coldest state?  How about the hottest, the driest, the wettest? For grades 4-7, the course content will be more advanced and will include presidential election issues. There's so much fun to be had and information to digest.  The class is going to take a fantastic journey through the land of the free.  Won't you come along for the ride?

Phun with Physics (Grades K - 7)

Mrs. Tammie French

Physics is PHUN!  In this class, the students (bodies in a state of rest) will perform hands-on activities (impressed forces) to learn (compelling changes)!  In other words, students will explore this wonderful universe God has created!  They will examine energy in all its forms, experiment with electric and magnetic forces, and demonstrate the nature of light, sound, and heat.  Physics will be phun when they create elastic matter, overcome friction, rediscover the laws of motion, design pendulums, bend light, make magnets, and much more.  In order to become active learners, students must learn to observe, ask questions, hypothesize, acquire knowledge, test explanations, and communicate their findings.  By using scientific processes and hands-on activities, they will do just that as they explore the world of physics.  Are you ready to enjoy the exciting universe of motion, forces, and energy?  Let's make Sir Isaac Newton proud!

Readers' Workshop:  How Words Work (Grades K - 1)
Writers' Workshop:   How Books Begin (Grades 2 - 3)

Mrs. Tracey Wozniak

Children can learn to read and write as naturally as they learned to walk and talk.  HOW WORDS WORK and HOW BOOKS BEGIN provide a workshop environment where the approach to literary instruction is through immersion in quality, ability, and appropriate literature.  In How Words Work, the children will learn to put all the parts of reading together as they integrate meaning, structure, and visual cues while decoding text as well as building their excitement and independence for reading through sharing and talking about books.  In addition, How Books Begin will solidify reading skills by having children practice the skills through creating, editing, and publishing their own writing.

These workshops are designed to meet emerging, early, or fluent readers/writers where they are and inspire growth in meaningful ways. This class in not just about students learning to skillfully read and write - it is learning to love reading and writing!

Parents:  Partnering with these workshops will be a Parent Forum for a time of demonstrating techniques and skills, asking questions, providing answers, and connecting your child's school experience with home lessons.  The optional Parent Forum will be offered immediately following HOUSE each Monday.

Royal Connection:  Monarchies of the World (Grades K - 3)

Mrs. Sandy Pelton

Long live the Queens!  And Kings, Dukes, Princes, Emirs, Sultans, Prime Ministers, Emperors, and more!  After passports are stamped, students will join a worldwide adventure as they explore Royal Monarchies around the world.  They will visit Monarchies in England, Denmark, Monaco, Norway, Belgium, and Spain where they will meet the rulers of these countries and learn about their responsibilities and dive into the history of their empires, national flag, geography, natural resources, food, currency, industry, religious beliefs, and much more.   Students will sample food from the country they are studying each week.  Did you know that Monaco is the most expensive place in the world, but that it also has 0% unemployment?  Each week, a student will be selected to serve as Prince or Princess of the week.  On that special day, the Prince or Princess will receive a crown or tiara to wear and be treated as royalty.   Class-related optional field trips will be offered during the school year and students will create several International crafts.  In this class, each student will experience being a Royal -  first-hand!

Science Discovery Labs  (Grades 4 - 7)

Mrs. Melony West

Discover the amazing world God has created!  Through challenging and exciting hands-on experiences, students will explore biology, chemistry, earth science, and physical science principles in action.  Each week they will discover scientific concepts - not by listening or reading, but by DOING!  They will be cultivating bacteria and testing antibiotics, making joints and simulating synovial fluid, bending light and recreating Newton's prism experiment, making circuits, and creating light.  That's just the beginning.  Students will practice the scientific method and use critical thinking skills to hypothesize and record their findings.  They will learn the art of observation and the power of prediction.  Grab your goggles and get ready to discover our wonderful world!

Schoolyard Games (Grades K - 3)

Mr. Tim Werner

Do you remember when you were in school how excited you were to go to PE?  It was there that everyone learned to play games with other children.  The games that were played could not be played alone, they could only be played with friends.  This class will provide children the positive experience of group games along with personal exercise.  Each class will begin with structured exercise and stretching in order to build personal habits.  By the end of the program each child will understand a daily routine that they will be able to do at home. Students will also learn games that they are able to take home and play with friends on their own. This is a class that kids will be excited to attend and look forward to coming!  Students will learn many favorite games such as Four Square, Statues, Kick the Can, Nine Holes, Graces, Marbles, Boss-Out, Hot Buttered Beans, Three-legged Race, Dodgeball, Egg in the Spoon, Push the Potato, Spin the Trencher, Tug-of-War, and many others!

Sign Language (Grades K - 7)

Mrs. Elisabeth Graeser

This class is designed to teach students a unique way to communicate without speaking.  Students will learn a complete vocabulary of sign language and how to combine words to form useful phrases.  Class time will incorporate the use of instructional songs, games, and practice conversations to aid students in the learning process. At the end of the year, students will have an opportunity to showcase what they have learned.  Join the class as we speak without words, but say more than you can imagine.

SPARK:  Sports, Play, & Active Recreation for Kids (Grades 4 - 7)

Mrs. Kim Schionning

This class will actively engage students in sufficient amounts of moderate to vigorous physical activity to improve and/or maintain their physical health and well-being. Another goal will be to encourage the students to apply the skills and knowledge they acquire during class and to seek opportunities to be active outside of class as part of a healthy lifestyle.  Additionally, instructional units will develop motor, personal, and social skills.  The Presidents' Physical Fitness Challenge will be an integral part of each week.  Students will be encouraged to set their own personal goals and strive throughout the year to meet their goals!  Students of all skill levels are encouraged to come to SPARK!  Scientists are learning more every day of the relationship between mind and body. It may serve us well to remember the philosophy of the ancient Greeks:   "When health is absent, wisdom cannot reveal itself, art cannot become manifest, strength cannot be exerted, wealth becomes useless, and reason becomes powerless."  Herophilus, 300 B.C.

Spirit Club & Tumbling:  Go, Team, Go! (Grades K - 7)

Ms. Katelyn Neal
This class is for girls who are new to the program or for returning students who are interested in physical fitness, teamwork, leadership, and standing up for their beliefs. This class will teach basic stretching, strengthening exercises, dance routines, and cheers!  Students will have the opportunity to perform in a variety of venues including Open House Events and CCS sports functions.  Attention Parents:  As with any performance-oriented activity, uniforms are necessary to provide a consistent appearance and to promote team spirit and unity. If students intend to perform at Circle Christian School games, a uniform consisting of a shell (top), skirt, sliders (similar to biking shorts), and shoes will be necessary.  Instructor will provide uniform information.  Go, TEAM, Go!
